Achievements» “QUEEN” COAL / WOOD FIRED POTTERY KILN

  1. Application :
It is a low cost coal or wood fired furnace, made with red brick & clay. The ‘Queen’ kiln sinters (baking) all kinds of potteries/terracotta such as handicrafts, domestic earthenware, roof tiles, water filters etc. at uniform high temperature (800-9000C) in order to obtain good quality and long life of potteries. The kiln operates by dual fuels, such as low grade coal or wood. It reduces 60% fuel consumption & sintering period, 70% pollution & labour over the traditional pottery kilns. Breakage of the potteries during sintering is almost nil.
  2. Raw Materials:
Ordinary construction red brick, clay, sand, iron grate for construction of the kiln.
  3. Process Features:
It is a down-draft tunnel kiln inbuilt with a short height chimney. Uniform temperature is easily obtained in few hours during its operation, for which breakage of potteries is negligible and quality of terracotta is superior. Complete combustion of fuels with low excess air is novelty of the furnace. It is a permanent structure. Loading and unloading of potteries are simple and carried out through a door. Therefore firing of potteries is not labour intensive unlike traditional pottery kiln.
  4. Market:
    500 kilns per year.
  5. Status of Commercialisation:
More than 200 kilns are in operation in Orissa and west Bengal for production of tiles and domestic pottery.
