The department functions as a facility to cater to the material analysis and the characterization requirement of various research projects of this laboratory as well as from outside agencies. The Department is equipped with sophisticated instruments to provide analysis of ores, minerals, intermediate products from metallurgical processes, alloys, steel etc.

Scientists of the Department provide analytical support to the various projects of importance and participate in the environment- oriented projects too. The Department has now developed strong research group working in the area of analysis and spectroscopy.
