PROBE-2008 AT IMMT-BHUBANESWAR

We being social animal we can not grow in isolation. For our survival we need a healthy and conducive and tolerable climate. Maintenance of healthy climate depends on us. For our growth we not only depend on man-made material but also on natural phenomena namely air we breathe, rain for our water requirement which is most essential component for our survival, and tolerant atmospheric temperature. Off late due to growth of population coupled with overall global development of economics resulting the three main pillars of developmental parameters such as industry, to cater to our demand to lead a comfortable life, agriculture to satisfy our hunger and thirdly the service sector which plays a vital role in the development of other two sectors. So the three sectors grow together hand-in hand and failure of one resulting the failure of other sectors. The overall development no doubt increase our comfort but along with our comfort it has created a negative effect on the ecology. Ecology being a natural phenomenon, the growth is always associated with profound effect on climate. So for our own benefit and survival we need to aim at sustainable development keeping in view the importance of growth of different sectors.

Due to global development of different sectors, there is no second opinion that we have created a profound pressure on nature to maintain the stability. We are observing prolonged summer, shifting of seasons, decrease of periodicity of winter, irregular monsoon resulting in either flooding or drought, increase of low pressure events causing frequent cyclonic weather specially for state like us having long coast line. Orissa being mainly agriculture state so slight change in climate has overbearing results. Our state has faced a number of cyclonic events in last one decade causing irreparable damage. For example the super cyclone of 1999 resulting in thousands of death, millions homeless, submerging appreciable fertile agricultural land, loss of property and the damaged caused yet to be annulled. Apart from cyclonic weather our state is having excess and inadequate rain. The inadequate rain in Western Orissa have an adverse effect on agricultural activities coupled with unprecedented increase in summer temperature.

The cause of climate change has many reasons but the main factor believed to be increase of Green House Concentration in the atmosphere. The global increase of ambient temperature would have an adverse effect especially for countries like us having a long coastline. Therefore, concerted effects need be initiated by all of us so that the future generation would have inherited from us a very conducive climate. Therefore, society as a whole need to be aware of the facts about the reasons behind climate change and its possible remedial measure for maintaining ecological balance.

Keeping in view the importance of climate change, Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi has sponsored this programme. The programme deals with setting up different meteorological equipments in different schools located in different parts of Orissa. The concerned teacher and the student would handle the equipment under the able guidance of different Technology Resource Center. The main aim of this programme I feel make them aware the importance of different weather related parameters. They themselves with due course of time would be in a position to correlate the data with the natural phenomena.

Our Institute is working in the area dealing with environment and sustainable development since its inception. Right now we have one dedicated full-fledged Department looking after the same. We, as a Research Organization, have our own responsibility towards our society and we sincerely pursue our mandate in all seriousness and honesty.
