The Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (IMMT) is a national laboratory under the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR). It was set up in 1964 to carry out R&D of processes and products leading to the sustainable utilization of vast natural resources, especially mineral resources, available in the eastern region of our country. Over the last four decades, the laboratory has established impeccable credential in the areas of mineral engineering, extractive metallurgy and special materials. It is now regarded as the preferred R&D destination for mineral and metal industries in the country for development of new processes and products to add value to their existing business. Along with a highly qualified, experienced, interdisciplinary team of scientists, the institute has world class state-of-the-art facilities to deliver technological inputs to mineral and material industry comparable in quality with any international organization.

There has been a paradigm shift in the approach towards R&D in India, with emphasis on intellectual property, globally competitive innovative research. It is widely recognized that teaching and research play a symbiotic and synergistic role in catalyzing such a transformation. Hence, the “Two Year Post Graduate Research Programme in Engineering” of CSIR-AIST is an effort to combine post-graduate education and research with the excellent infrastructure already available in CSIR, to produce highly motivated, skilled, research ready manpower, with adequate specialization in their respective R&D domains, to become innovation leaders of future.
