Scientist of the Month
Dr. J.K. Mohanty obtained his Ph.D. degree in Science (Geology) from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar in 1994 under the guidance of Dr. R.K.Sahoo. In 1984, he joined as Scientist-B in Mineralogy and Metallography Department. He got his Ph.D. for working on the chromite deposits of Boula Nausahi igneous complex. His main research interest lies in the areas of oxides (Chromite, titaniferous magnetite), Nickel laterite and coal. Besides, he is currently working on characterisation and utilization of Low grade Iron ores (BHJ,BHQ & BMQ) of Orissa and fluoride contamination of ground water. He is also working in various environmental related projects.

He has guided five students for their Ph.D. degree.

He is a Life Member in Geological Society of India, Indian Institute of metals, Indian Institute of Mineral Engineers and Society of Geoscientists and Applied Technologists.

Major Research Activities:
  1. Mineralogy and geochemistry of Chromite and Titaniferous magnetite deposits of Orissa; Extensive study on mineralogy, geochemistry and genesis of the chromite deposits of Boula-Nausahi area, Sukinda area. Geochemistry and genesis of titaniferous magnetite of Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts of Orissa
  2. Platinum Group Element mineralisation at Boula-Nausahi Igneous complex, Orissa: mineralisation styles and systematics of PGE occurrence at Boula –Nausahi area of Keonjhar district, Orissa .
  3. Mineralogy, geochemistry of coal and environmental impact of coal mining and utilization: Petrographic and geochemistry of coals from different coals seams of Talcher Coal field. Trace element concentrations in coal, their impact during mining and utilization in power plants on environment
  4. Mineralogy and geochemical study of Iron Ore deposits (BHJ, BHQ, BMQ) of Orissa : Mineralogy and geochemistry of iron ores from banded iron ore formations of Orissa with a view to their optimum utilisation
  5. Mineralogical characterisation of low and off grade ores, slags, magnesian rocks, Ni-laterite etc. for their effective/optimum utilization.
  6. Ground water in hard rock terrains: quality assessment, contamination and probable remedial measures .
Awards:
  1. Peravadhanulu Award in 1995 & 1997 by Indian Institute of Mineral Engineers for best paper on mineral characterisation
  2. H.S. Pareek Award in 2002 and 2006 by Geological Society of India for best paper published in Coal in the Journal of Geological society of India.
