BACKGROUND

The MNRE a National Programme on Improved Cookstoves(NPIC) was launched by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy(MNRE), Government of India in 1984 and the programme continued till 2003. Around 35 million cookstoves were reported to had been disseminated under the programme. A variety of cookstove designs for both domestic and commercial cooking were disseminated. In 2009, keeping in view the advancement in cookstove technology and growing concern for energy security and health hazard concerns of women and children in rural areas, MNRE launched a new initiative called “National Biomass Cookstove Initiative (NBCI)” for development and demonstration for promotion of efficient cookstoves as clean cooking solutions in the country with primary aim of enhancing the availability of clean efficient energy for energy deficient and poorer sections of the society. As follow up to the NBCI, the MNRE in 2011 set up four test facilities for carrying out performance testing of cookstoves and for developing test protocols and standards. One of the test facilities has been set up at CSIR- IMMT, Bhubaneswar. The test facilities have been engaged in performance testing and development of standards and test protocols for biomass cookstoves. In view of Keeping in view the newer and advanced forced draft cookstoves that came to market in recent years, MNRE in consultation with Test Centres initiated a testing programme for stream lining the process of testing and for developing revised standards and test protocols for portable improved biomass cookstoves to maintain the quality of products. On the basis of extensive testing and analysis carried out in these Test Centres, the MNRE in 2013 developed a revised standard and test protocols for portable biomass cookstoves, which has recently been published by the Bureau of Indian Standards, New Delhi. The revised standard stipulates thermal efficiency of natural draft solid portable cookstoves not less than 25 %, CO and TPM not to exceed 5 g/MJd and 350 mg/MJd, respectively. For forced draft type cookstove, the thermal efficiency should not be less than 35% and CO and TPM not to exceed 5 g/MJd and 150 mg/MJd, respectively. The revised standards are being followed for performance testing of cookstoves in test centres. The cookstoves qualifying the standard are approved by MNRE, which are taken up for pilot scale demonstration in field. As follow up to the National Biomass Cook-stove Initiative (NBCI), the Ministry initiated a new proposal for promoting the development and deployment of Unnat Chulhas (Biomass Cookstoves) in the country. TESTING FACILITY

The biomass cookstove test centre is well equipped and is having modern instruments for testing of biomass cookstoves. The facility consists of high capacity aerodynamically operated Fume Hood, VA-3000/VS-3000 Multi-component CO &CO2 Analyzer(M/s HORIBA ,JAPAN), SMS-4 Stack Monitoring System for particulate matter measurement, high sensitivity Sartorius Mass Balance, Parr 6100 Bomb calorimeter (USA) for calorific value, Moisture analyzer from Denver IR 60, Germany, hot wire anemometer, mass balance heavy capacity (upto 100 kg), Digital thermocouples and Hot air oven.
