Twelve
appropriate technologies of IMMT, Bhubaneswar has been compiled for
small and micro sector to support self-employment. Profiles of these
are broadly classified as rural energy, safe drinking water, cooking
and heating in pollution free environment, processing and harvesting
of cereal and pulses, drying of various materials and food grains,
terracotta and pottery etc.
This would result a sustainable rural development in the country.
The drier is used for drying & heating of various agriculture products, food and industrial materials in a clean environment within a temperature range of 50 0C to 90 0C through burning biomass without using electricity. Drying materials never get contaminated with smoke & combustion gases as indirect drying is always carried out. It is suitable for drying of noodles, vermicelli's, potato chips, vegetables, papad, badi, spices like zinger, onion, garlic, cardamom etc., cereal & pulses, parboiled rice, fish, meat, tea leaves, industrial products, textiles, baking of paint (heat paint) over auto-mobile & furniture etc. Average wood consumption for drying is @ 3.3 kg/hr.
2. Raw Materials:
Mild Steel Angle & Sheet, Plywood & Thermocol sheets and G.I. plate.
3. Process Features:
The biomass drier functions like an electric drier although it operates by firewood & other biomass. Firewood burns completely in the stove of the integrated heating unit of the drier to release all heat energy, and the heat flux of the flue gas (combustion gas) transmits into the drying materials indirectly through a box type heat exchanger, before it is released to outside through the chimney. The drier maintains a uniform temperature with high thermal efficiency. About 20% to 30% of energy cost & drying period are reduced when compared over electric heated drier.

The portable stoves are used for cooking in smokeless condition with reduced fuel consumption and pollution. A variety of solid fuels such as wood, twig, leaf, dung cake, agricultural waste, raw coal, briquettes etc., can be burnt in the stoves at high thermal efficiency (upto 30%) irrespective of different physical & chemical characteristics. Fuel saving is 50% over the traditional cook stoves. Portable in use, Cooking Capacity = 5 to 500 persons with different sizes of the stoves.
2. Raw Materials:
Mild steel sheet for fabrication of stove.
3. Process Features:
Fixed carbon and volatile components of the fuels burn in the corrugated grate and perforated combustion chamber of the stove respectively, with help of preheated primary and secondary air streams to obtain complete combustion with low excess air. The ash scraper helps to remove ash intermittently during burning of the high ash fuels. Otherwise ash discharges automatically from the stove. High temperature clean flame (800 0C) with reduced smoke, pollution & CO2 gas is always obtained.

Improved low cost fixed chulhas (cook stove) are used for cooking in complete smoke & pollution free environment with reduced fuel consumption. Biomass, Agro-waste and dung cake etc., burn in the chulhas for cooking at high thermal efficiency (25%), which saves 40% fuels over the traditional chulhas. Exhaust gases release outside through a chimney to maintain the kitchen free from smoke or hot gas. The chimney protrudes through the wall or roof of the kitchen as per local conditions and de-carbonisation of the chimney.
Pre-fabricated terracotta simple components, clay, and asbestos cement pipe.
Fuels burn completely due to continuos flow of air over the char and unburnt fuels in the hearth of the chulha by the suction effect of the chimney. Hot flue gas or smoke does not leak into the kitchen due to low pressure in the chulha. Flame and hot flue gas always glide over bottom surface of the cook pot inside the stove before it is released to the chimney, resulting to high rate of heat transfer from the flame to cook pot. Simple design with cylindrical combustion chamber of the chulha facilitate for ease construction, high thermal efficiency, care free use and high acceptability among the users.

"Queen" Coal / Wood Fired Pottery Kiln
It is a low cost coal or wood fired furnace, made with red brick & clay. The 'Queen' kiln sinters (baking) all kinds of potteries/terracotta such as handicrafts, domestic earthenware, roof tiles, water filters etc. at uniform high temperature (800-9000C) in order to obtain good quality and long life of potteries. The kiln operates by dual fuels, such as low grade coal or wood. It reduces 50% fuel consumption & sintering period, 50% pollution & labour over the traditional pottery kilns. Breakage of the potteries during sintering is almost nil.
Ordinary construction red brick, clay, sand, iron grate for construction of the kiln.
It is a down-draft tunnel kiln inbuilt with a short height chimney. Uniform temperature is easily obtained in few hours during its operation, for which breakage of potteries is negligible and quality of terracotta is superior. Complete combustion of fuels with low excess air is novelty of the furnace. It is a permanent structure. Loading and unloading of potteries are simple and carried out through a door. Therefore firing of potteries is not labour intensive unlike traditional pottery kiln.

TERAFIL is a low cost burnt red clay porous media (disc/candle), used for filtration & treatment of turbid raw water into clean drinking water for domestic/ community applications. Suspended particles, sediment, iron & many heavy metals, micro-organism, colour & bad odour etc are separated from raw water effectively during filtration, without clogging the core of the TERAFIL. It can be fixed with any container for purification of water. Quality of product water is within BIS limits, especially for turbidity, iron & micro-organisms. Cost of purification is within Rs.3/- per ton of product water, considering total cost of plant. It operates without electricity, spent water and sludge management. Average life of TERAFIL media is three years. 50 to 1,00,000 lit/day capacity filter/plants is available for domestic, online & community applications.
Pottery clay, sand & wood saw dust for preparation of TERAFIL media (disc/candle).
TERAFIL is prepared out of a mixture of sand, red clay & wood saw dust. Terafil media comprises of thin clay walls (clay membranes) and each clay wall separated by large size pores. The thin clay walls contain ultra-fine capillary openings (sub-micron in size) which bridge the pores. Raw water flows from one pore to anther through capillary openings during filtration in Terafil media, leaving behind sediments, suspended particles etc., on top surface of Terafil. Terafil helps for effective filtration & treatment of raw water into clean drinking water. Terafil is fitted at the bottom of any container for filtration and treatment of raw water.
